The Road to Inclusive Sizing
These are real emails we’ve gotten: “for being ‘woman owned’ you aren’t very size inclusive”, “your sizing doesn’t ‘include’ much” & “where are the real sizes?” And these are all valid statements, because we don’t make clothes for every body (but all sizes are real sizes).
Our line is not fully size inclusive. Our sizes range from XSS-XXL, in limited products, but are adding several more pieces in new sizes this fall.
There’s an important point to be made here - the reason Youer doesn’t offer a fully inclusive line IS NOT BECAUSE WE DON’T WANT TO. We are not intentionally excluding an amazing population of vibrant women. We are simply working up to being fabulous enough to earn your support.
Until 2020, 4% of our sales were XL and over 40% in size small. That math didn’t say “make larger sizes”. You’re probably thinking “well of course only 4%, because you didn’t make more than 4%!” Bue we did! And at the end of each season our leftover sizes were always large and XL that had to be steeply discounted. This season, we still have XL & XXL on the ‘shelves’.
Last year, we chose to add 2 new sizes (XXS & XXL), and it took a full year for them to make it to our line, because making extended sizing clothing doesn’t mean simply making straight sizes larger/smaller. It means working with a pattern maker who specializes in these types of patterns, learning about anatomy, listening, watching and making lots of samples.
As we finish up a full season of selling XXL, we have some different numbers. We’re now seeing 14% of our skort sales in size XL and 3% in XXL. 3% isn’t telling us we should add more sizes (because we still have a good amount in stock), but we will be making this size in more stuff! In the coming months, you’ll be able to find XXL in our Follow Through Pants, Earned It Leggings and our coveted Treasure Dress.
So, saying “for being ‘woman owned’ you aren’t very size inclusive” or “your sizing doesn’t ‘include’ much” doesn’t tell us anything about you, what you need, what you want or how we can shape this brand to support you.
